Do you have sensory issues that affect your communication? The doctor said my loss of speech is a result of anxiety, but I don't believe that. Rather, it's a result of an overtaxed sensory system.

I get slow speech or can lose it completely in a stressful sensory environment and I can lose physical movements too, or they become delayed.

Has anyone suggested anything to do about it?

Apart from 'toughen up'? No.
I'm trying to come up with ways to explain it in an NT language, i.e sound makes me dizzy, supermarkets make me anxious, I think I'm going to throw up, etc. I think people get put off by me saying they are purely sensory issues because they can't relate so they don't believe me. I haven't yet said 'emotions make me angry.' That's going to have to take some courage on my part.

Can you get OT? They're working on finding me an OT...

I still haven't got through to them yet. I think the first thing I'll say to my psychiatrist next time I see him is about my sensory issues. They are becoming really severe.

I was reminded today that noises can totally disrupt my ability to think or talk, and it can take some time for me to gather everything again. This was really bad when I was on a trip to California with a friend and her talking GPS. Every time it spoke I briefly lost thought and speech and couldn't remember what I had been saying. I've found other loud and obnoxious noises can have similar effect.
Strong chemical smells and bright lights can have similar effects, as can unexpected touches.
When I have shutdowns from overload I also tend to lose speech for a few hours longer than the shutdown itself, sometimes for a day or so.

Background noise totally throws off my auditory processing. I was doing a game (Earobics) at speech yesterday, and some men were working on the roof, and when they did things, I bombed the level.
